Our new topic is Land Ahoy and we have already had great fun playing in our pirate ship. We have a trip booked to meet a real pirate in Swansea Waterfront Museum on Tuesday 23rd January, so please look out for more information coming home with your child soon.
Reading books are expected to be in school every day and PE kits are needed on Thursdays and Fridays.
WELCOME TO YEAR 1
with Mrs Harries and Mrs Doyle
Hopefully, your child will have given you the letter we sent out this week explaining that reading books are to be brought in daily, and reading records are to be filled in as often as possible. PE kits will be needed on Thursday and Fridays and may be left in school on your child's peg if you wish.
The letter also informed you of what your child replied when we asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up. The career choices were varied and entertaining, we had policemen, nurses, pilots, pizza delivery man, 'myself', a sister for my brother and the Tooth Fairy. Her friend was quick to point out that she would have to be rich though as the Tooth Fairy gives a lot of money away!
We had a lovely start to the school year and each child seems settled already. On Friday, we spent the day looking after our very own Jelly Babies and I am pleased to report that we have a very caring class! The Jelly Babies were bathed, sung to and read to and one was even put in the fridge to keep him safe! When Mrs Doyle couldn't find hers, your children were quick to offer theirs as a substitute.
During the next two weeks, we shall be taking part in activities based on Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile and then we shall begin our topic of Remember, Remember.
If you would like your child to have a fruit snack, please send the money in as soon as possible. All children enjoy a free drink of milk mid morning.
If you have any concerns, please speak to one of us so that they may be addressed promptly.
We look forward to working with you over the next 3 terms.
Welcome to Year 1 (Miss Edwards)
PE kit is needed every Friday. We will be encouraging the children to become independent when changing.
Reading books should be returned to school daily. Your child will be listened to and have their books changed at least once a week. Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and comment in their reading record.
Please ensure all jumpers and cardigans are labelled with your child's name.
Our topic this term is 'Growing Things/Supermarket'. Children will be doing a lot of investigating in this topic. They will be looking at what conditions seeds need to grow and planting lots of different vegetables and flowers. Our writing across the curriculum will include retelling their own version of 'The Little Red Hen' and a newspaper report on the book 'The Enormous Turnip'. Numeracy across the curriculum this term will involve lots of hands on practical experiences such as measuring the growth of different plants and ordering plants. They will have the opportunity to sort different seeds, observe grass growing, print with different vegetables and take part in lots of gardening role play.
We will be looking at different food packaging from supermarkets also. It is going to be an exciting term, where hopefully we can get outside lots.
Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed numeracy week. We took part in lots of problem solving activities, we used problem solving games and even created our own problems for the reception class.
We loved having our parents in to help us with the mind mission puzzles, which we worked together as teams to solve.
Year 1 enjoyed learning about Brazil as part of Rights Respecting School. They compared Brazil to life in Wales using a Venn diagram and made masks to dance to samba with. We dressed up in the colours of the flag.
